When Whitney Rose introduced herself to the world with her album Heartbreaker of the Year, I was hooked. Her songwriting and singing was not bound to current trends or tastes. She followed that up with the outstanding EP South Texas Suite. Rose is back again with Rule 6. In case you do not know, as I did not, the album title is a reference to a rule from Alchoholics Anonymous that says, and I paraphrase, dont take yourself too seriously. With that title, Rose drives home the point that her admirers already know. Nine of the twelve tracks were written by Whitney Rose, and The Mavericks Raul Malo and Niko Bolas serve as the albums producers. As on her previous projects, Rose is not afraid to tackle different styles, although rooted in country. There is the Tex Mex style of Arizona, the sound of 1. Truckers Funeral. There is plenty of steel guitar, piano, twangy lead guitar, and fiddle to around on tracks like I Dont Want Half I Just Want Out, You Never Cross My Mind, and Wake Me in Wyoming. Whitney Roses singing, songwriting, and I cannot forget to mention, her band has put together another outstanding project. The darling of the Austin, TX music scene is slowly being discovered elsewhere. Dont take yourself too seriously, but take my recommendation to the bank. Give Rule 6. 2 a listen. The album was produced by Tom Petty. I had already decided to review this album before receiving the news of Pettys death. The coincidence didnt make my skin crawl, but I did have a case of goosebumps. Bidin My Time is something of a pleasant surprise. Most people, including Hillman, thought that his recording career was done with his 2. The Other Side. However, with the making of a new album, and, with help from former Desert Rose Band member Herb Pederson, getting Tom Petty on board as the producer, Hillmans Bidin My Time is a gem. Some of the highlights on the album includes the albums first track, The Bells of Rhymney, a song The Byrds previously recorded. This version features the backing vocals of former bandmates David Crosby and Herb Pedersen. Hillman is joined by another former bandmate and co writer, Roger Mc. Guinn, on Here She Comes Again. He will also be touring in support of the album as well. If you get a chance to see Chris Hillman in concert, do it. Hillman is a legend, and has influenced rock, country and bluegrass acts. There is a very short list of artists that have had that kind of reach. Give Chris Hillmans Bidin My Time a listen today, and enjoy the sounds of a master at his craft. October 4, 2. 01. If you listen to WLHR in the last couple of months, you no doubt have heard Midlands Drinkin Problem. The song may sound a little out of place among todays other popular country music singles. Drinkin Problem is definitely a throwback to the sounds of country music from years gone by. I was curious what the rest of the album was going to sound like. I have heard album tracks from modern artist that include a heavy dose of steel guitar and fiddle, but the rest of the album is drenched in beat tracks. However, we rarely hear a radio single that has an older style, much less receive significant airplay. Midlands On the Rocks is completely in the vain of Drinkin Problem. On the Rocks provides 1. A lot of people have classified Midland as a nostalgia act, but just take a listen to this album, and you can hear how the band puts there on stamp on this style of music. Mark Wystrach, Cameron Duddy, and Jess Carson wrote or co wrote every song on the album. The opening musical lines of Lonely For Only You totally drew me in. Besides Drinkin Problem, some of the other tracks that stand out includes, At Least You Cried, Burn Out, and Nothin New Under the Neon. Although you can hear the influence of George Strait, Dwight Yoakam, Merle Haggard and Keith Whitley, I do not see Midland as a nostalgia act. They love the classic style of country music, and that is the vessel in which they deliver their songs. Not only will more people be exposed to Midlands style of country music by listening to their On the Rocks, but also next year on tour with Little Big Town and Kacey Musgraves. Turn on On the Rocks, sit back, relax, and let the steel guitar and fiddles flow. September 2. 7, 2. When I was growing up, one of my favorite albums was Radney Fosters Del Rio, TX 1. Not only was it one of the best sounding albums of the 9. As a bespectacled teenager with a guitar, Foster was added to my list of musical heroes, along with Buddy Holly and Elvis Costello. Through Del Rio, TX 1. I discovered Fosters earlier music with Bill Lloyd. Following Foster forward, I enjoyed his albums, not only for his singing, but for his ability to write songs that told stories. Radney Foster has now released a new album, and book, that is, perhaps, the best display of his talent as a storyteller. Radney Foster lost his voice in November of 2. He had to cancel shows, and could not even talk, having to communicate with his family through written notes. During that trying time of not being able to sing, Foster tried his hand at writing stories. Through the encouragement of his wife, and the critical eye of literary friends, he honed his new found craft, and now we have a book of short stories and a companion album called For You to See the Stars. Each song on the album is inspired by a story in the book, or, according to Foster, vice versa. I have listened to the album several times through, but at the time of writing this review, I have only read about half of the book. I can assure you that I will be finishing the book very soon. The album features ten tracks, nine new tunes, and a new recording of his hit Raining On Sunday. Some of the highlights of the album includes the beautiful title track, Belmont and 6th a song about the struggles of vets, The Greatest Show On Earth a beautiful picture of a family get together, It Aint Done With Me a song about having to deal with ones past. I can assure that you will be hearing songs from this album on The Breakfast with Porkchop Show is the weeks and months to come.
